After a series sweep of George Washington University, the 16-7 Houston Cougars have risen in the baseball polls. In the Baseball America rankings, they are now #15 and on D1Baseball.com they are #23.
While they only jumped up a spot in the former and two in latter, their performance against GWU was dominant. Granted, GWU was overmatched and obviously an inferior team, the Cougars still outscored the Colonials 24-2 over the three game series, and shut them out twice.
Houston has won 12 of their last 14 games. After starting the season 4-5, including a five game losing streak, they have largely found their rhythm. But, at times, they still struggle against talented teams, such as their loss to Rice last Tuesday.
The Cougars will be put to the test again, when they take on #1 ranked Texas A & M this Tuesday. The Aggies are coming off of a series win over perennial powerhouse LSU, who was ranked #10 at the time.
Houston will face the best team in the nation, and if they want to rise even further in the polls, they will have to win games like these. Or at least contend.
