The UCF Knights fell to 11-12 and 5-7 in conference after they lost to a Houston Cougar team without their leading scorer, Rob Gray Jr. The Cougars are now 18-7 and 8-5 in conference. After this 82-58 victory, they are now fourth in the conference among post-season eligible teams.
Houston secured this emphatic home win through no one dominant player. Devonta Pollard, who has really become this team’s leader in the absence of Gray Jr, put up 16 points, including going 8-9 from the free throw line. But both Danrad Knowles and LeRon Barnes scored 13. And Daymean Dotson, 12. It was a team win for the Cougars, who spread the ball around and outrebounded the Knights 40-31.
UCF struggled to stop the Houston offense, which was in the hands of so many. Guards Matt Williams and Chance McSpadden scored in the double digits, with 13 and 10, respectively. But, ultimately, they didn’t have enough offensive firepower to secure the conference win against the now streaking Cougars.
Valentine’s Day will be sweet for the Houston squad, who can go into Sunday feeling good about themselves. But, this feeling won’t last, as they will have to prepare for the Tulane Green Wave, who they take play on Wednesday February 17th in New Orleans.
