Over at SB Nation they’ve recently finished up their 2015 college football previews for the entire American Athletic Conference. Writer Bill Connelly then does a conference power rankings based on where he feels teams in the conference will rank. Connelly has the Cougars ranked at 7th(!) in the conference rankings.
From the article:
Though Houston returns an excellent backfield — one new head coach Tom Herman will know how to utilize — the Cougars are starting over in the receiving corps and the defensive front seven. Still, they’re only a couple of steps behind.
While I’m obviously biased as a Cougar homer, and I do understand his perspective and skepticism of the Cougars potential, I still strongly disagree. In 2014 the Cougars finished 8-5 overall and ranked 5th in the conference, in spite of having a mediocre head coach and an offensive coordinator who was in over his head. While I do expect it to take a year or two for Herman and his staff to get everything completely up to speed, I think UH will still be battling for the conference championship in Herman’s first season. 9 or 10 reasons isn’t out of the question.
Oh well. I’d rather be underestimated than overhyped. Let’s prove ’em wrong Cougars!
